On Tuesday, Google announced that it will put $15 billion into India over the next five years. This announcement included plans for a massive data center and AI facility in Andhra Pradesh, which will be its biggest AI center outside of the United States.

The American technology company plans to construct a one-gigawatt data center complex in Visakhapatnam, a coastal city. This center will feature AI technology, large energy sources, and a boosted fiber-optic network. Google is collaborating with the Adani Group for this AI data center project. This is the biggest investment Google has ever made in India. "It will be the largest AI center we have invested in anywhere globally, apart from the US," stated Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, during an event in Delhi to finalize the agreement. He mentioned that Google aims for the center to eventually "grow to several gigawatts."

The event also saw the presence of Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and state IT Minister Nara Lokesh.

Vaishnaw expressed gratitude to Google for its investment, stating, "This digital infrastructure will significantly help us achieve our AI goals for India." Naidu referred to the announcement as a "very happy day," while Lokesh described it as a "game-changing investment" that followed "a year of hard discussions and tireless efforts."

He remarked on X, "This is a huge step forward for our state's digital future, innovation, and international reputation." He also added, "This is only the start." This initiative comes as competition heats up among major tech companies, which are heavily investing in new data center infrastructure to satisfy the soaring demand for AI services. Microsoft and Amazon have already invested billions in constructing data centers in India, which is expected to have over 900 million internet users by the end of the year. OpenAI has announced its plans to establish an office in India later this year, with its leader, Sam Altman, mentioning that the usage of ChatGPT in India had increased four times in the past year.
