Denver Broncos pockets Earl Mitchell

Seven-year defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, who plays in defensive end in a 3-4 system, was released a week ago by the Miami Dolphins because of salary considerations.

The 29-year-old must have something amazing because eight teams competed to sign him. But he narrowed his choices from those eight teams to four and finally Denver Broncos made the first cut.

Earl Mitchell is scheduled to meet with the team on Wednesday night, and he will begin his tour, by first visiting with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday and Tuesday and the San Franciso 49ers on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, before moving on to the Denver Broncos on Wednesday night and into Thursday. Mitchell will complete his sweep with the Atlanta Falcons on the night of Thursday and the morning of Friday.

Earl Mitchell is a guy that every team needs to have in their locker room, he is a leader who gives his all on the field. Standing at 6.3 and 300 pounds, he would be a run-stopping, three technique defensive end in the Broncos’ 3-4 front.

The home team struggled at that position in the previous season after losing Malik Jackson and Vance Walker.

The Denver Broncos sat on the top in passing defense last season, but it went down to 28th against the run by 130.3 yards per game in the NFL. Rival teams sought their fear of pass rushing linebacker Von Miller and the Broncos’ man-to-man blanketing secondary by averaging an astonishing 30.1 run plays a game. Just 2-14 San Francsico and 1-15 Cleveland, faced more rushing attempts.

Last year Broncos signed Jared Crick as a free agent with the game plan of having him play 30 to 40 % of the defensive snaps. He wound up playing 82 percent of the time as second-round rookie Adam Gotsis was slow in his development as he was playing less than a year following his own ACL surgery.

If the team could land Mitchell, the defensive game-plan can then turn to nose tackle where they would require to need a replacement for Sylvester Williams, who is being expected to test the market when the free agency opens on 9th March.
