Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill has come back to the team hotel after being released from the hospital on Sunday. He injured his neck on Saturday and did not bat in the second innings of the first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Gill was taken to Woodlands hospital in Kolkata, and reports say he was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Luckily, he is now stable and able to walk and turn his neck with little pain. Former Indian captain and president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, Sourav Ganguly, visited him in the hospital and spoke with him for 15 minutes. Gill will now be recuperating at the team hotel, and the BCCI medical staff will keep an eye on his condition. However, it is still uncertain if the talented batsman will participate in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati that starts on November 22.
Previously, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that Shubman Gill's neck injury is under evaluation, and the physiotherapist is expected to decide on his health. Gill stepped in to bat after Washington Sundar got out but only faced three balls before leaving the field. In his absence, Rishabh Pant took over as captain for the team's second innings against South Africa. "He's still being assessed. So, let's see. The physios will make a decision this evening, and we'll decide tomorrow," Gambhir told the media. Gill not being in the Test match allowed South Africa to win, as they triumphed over India by 30 runs on Sunday. Spinner Simon Harmer's remarkable eight-wicket performance and Temba Bavuma's solid half-century were key factors that separated India and South Africa in the match. South Africa now leads the two-match series 1-0. This was India's first loss at Eden Gardens since December 2012 against England.
