Monsoon season brings many difficult health problems or at least makes existing issues worse. Changes in the weather can trigger joint issues, which is a major worry for those with arthritis or sensitive joints. When the pressure drops, the tissues around the joints can expand a bit. This increase in tissue pressure adds strain on the joints, resulting in pain and tightness, especially for arthritis patients. Imagine your joints as balloons. When the air pressure falls outside, the tissues inside puff up, but unlike balloons, joints aren't really designed to handle extra inflation. Besides the changes in air pressure, several other weather factors affect us, including humidity and shifts in temperature.
High humidity can lead to fluid buildup in soft tissues. This can cause swelling and a feeling of heaviness in the joints, making it hard to move or causing pain. While watching the rain fall outside, you might feel your knees swelling like wet sponges. When there's less lubrication, friction increases, leading to stiffer and more painful joints.
Here are some habits that may help reduce joint pain:
- Get moving: Take a walk through your living space. Stretch your calf muscles.
- Use heat: A warm shower or a heating pad can stimulate blood flow to painful areas, easing discomfort.
- Cut down on salty snacks: Eating too much salt can increase swelling, making joint pain worse.
- Use a dehumidifier: If your home feels damp, open windows or use a dehumidifier. Musty air can make your joints feel heavier and intensify stiffness.
